Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides have taken their toll on our soils and on our health. With all the advances in science, there continues to be new evidence on a daily basis about the unhealthy products we are exposed to. It's not rocket science - it makes sense that we need to be more aware of what we put in our bodies.
Our food comes from soil, one way or the other. The meat we eat comes from grazing animals - whether it's chickens or cattle. With every application of chemicals, natural soil organisms are depleted. Plants, grasses, and feedstock grains begin a dependency on these chemicals because there is nothing left in the soil to sustain them. What these animals eat become our foods.
Soils that have been treated with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides often are depleted of earthworms, lady bugs, and other beneficial critters. They aren't there. The only thing to sustain plants and offer nutrients are the chemicals we use - making our plants drug junkies. If we do not use these chemicals, plants die because we've depleted our soil beyond belief.
The organic approach is about building healthy soil that sustains plants and animals. Think about the forest - walking through a rich, sweet smelling forest that has everything to offer it's tenants - the plants that live and thrive there need nothing - no chemical fertilizers, no pesticides. Why is this so? Mother Nature provides organic matter, microorganisms for nutrient uptake, natural defenses to ward off disease and stress. There is nothing we need to add to the forest - it is self-sustaining!
With the organic approach, our gardens can become like the forest - every nutrient is found in the soil if we build it correctly.
Being stewards of the soil makes sense - for our health, for our environment, and for our children. Everything begins with the soil!
