Bougainvillea's Growth

Bougainvilleas are the most popular and widely grown tropical vines. Known to be from Brazil, the Bougainvillea's growth is highly favoured in areas having tropical type of weather, that counts India, Australia, Mediterranean region, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Caribbean, Panama, Mexico, South Africa, and the United States in Arizona, Florida, California, Texas and Hawaii.

Growing Bougainvillea requires much time and concentration. The key ingredients to grow bougainvilleas are: Water, sunlight and fertilisers. Bougainvillea is fond of the sun. It requires atleast 5 hours a day of direct exposure to sunlight for good blooming. The sun, about to set, works miracles for it. They love warm climates. In partial shades, you’ll get the growth but don't expect any flowers. Bougainvillea also like pots and can bloom well there. Make sure the pot is not inside, as they do not bloom indoors. If you are growing bougainvilleas inside, then make sure they must be placed in a sunny spot, close to a window might do the trick. Putting a black pot in direct sun should be avoided. That may be a little too much heat.

Drainage is very important for Bougainvillea's smooth growth. It should be made absolutely sure that the pot has good drainage. Styrofoam peanuts are good for drainage at the bottom of the pot and also keeps the pot light even with the potting soil. Size of the pot should be regularly checked. Keep the plant pot-bound until the roots have replaced all the soil. If the plant is to be transported, the new pot must be bigger than the previous one in size. And because the plant is in a pot, it surely needs fertilizers. A balanced fertilizer works wonderfully well. The fertilizer must contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The fertilizer used must be soluble and well mixed with water before using. With good light and constant feeding, the plants will blossom every time of the year. Straight hibiscus food is also a very good fertilizer for bougainvillea.

The bougainvillea requires ample amount of water, enough to really soak the soil. For potted plants, the water should run out of the hole. Don’t allow a puddle. Bougainvillea does not like it. Water only when the top most layer of soil has dried out. Keep the plant slightly on the drier side, and allow the plant to become more root bound. In warmer months, it will need more water than in cooler seasons.

Best thing about growing a Bougainvillea is that, they can be pruned at any time of the year. The plant has a bloom cycle which is followed by a rest period that does not depend on its pruning. In winters, they should be placed into a glasshouse for its natural blooming. A warm spot for them will prevent them against any damage.

Bougainvillea needs very much care. Don't expect it to flower neatly without putting an effort into it. If you don't have much time to give to your lawn, bougainvillea is not meant for you. Be sure to keep an eye on its growth. A good routine to grow this plant will surely make your garden look pretty and you will be rewarded for all your efforts.
