Vertical Gardening for Limited Space

As housing goes more and more high rise with less and less ground (if any) available for gardening it makes sense to go high rise with your gardening too!

Growing vegetables vertically enables you to produce as much as possible in a limited space, in fact it could even increase your harvest 300%.

By growing plants that can be trained to grow up (or down) you are utilizing 'air space' that would otherwise be wasted.

There are all manner of ways to garden vertically to use this space.

Hanging baskets, even they can be tiered to have one hanging below the other (doubling your production). You could hang several baskets from a pole with brackets at differing heights, may be you can utilize a veranda pole. Hang baskets from brackets attached to a wall.

Tiered planters and shelves make more planting space for the same floor area.

Train plants up veranda poles or along balcony rails.

Attach trellises, strings or wires to walls to train your plants up.

Place a trellis in a free standing trough and grow something up it to make a decorative and productive screen which you can move about if you wish.

Attach planters to walls and let your plants trail down.

There are lots of different types of supports available to grow your plants up or you could make your own 'tepees' with 3 or 4 stakes poked in to the ground in a triangle or square pattern and then tied together at the top.

Once you start thinking vertically you will come up with no end of ways to make use of that otherwise wasted 'air space'.

Vertical gardening takes container gardening to the next level.

Container gardening allows you to have a garden anywhere even if you don't have ground for traditional gardening. There are so many advantages to growing in containers. The soil warms up quicker resulting in earlier crops. Weeding that everyone hates is greatly reduced. Containers are easier to protect from the elements and as long as they aren't too big can be moved about. You can garden without getting your feet wet or muddy. You have complete control over what your plants are growing in. Container gardening is great for the elderly or less able as there isless bending or they can be placed at a suitable height to eliminate bending altogether. It is great for children too. They can have a garden of their own in a container.

Vegetables or fruit growing in containers can be very ornamental and productive as well, especially if you combine it with vertical gardening to increase your production dramatically.

Why not try growing vertically, use your imagination and have fun, and see how much more you can grow even if your space is limited.
