Vinyl, Steel Or Timber - What's Best For Your Shed?

Don't buy or build a shed before learning about maybe the most important shed characteristic - its material. The material that is used defines the entire functionality of this cute backyard building - and things like price, sustainability and comfort.

So, which one is the best? The shortest answer is that each material is best for specific needs. We'll discuss the three most popular materials and will help you to decide what's the most appropriate for your case.

Vinyl Sheds
Vinyl sheds are also called plastic storage sheds. They appeared in the recent years which is probably why most people still look at them with some suspicion. But you know biases aren't a good adviser. Let's try to explore the qualities of the vinyl sheds objectively:

Their advantages start with the good price. Most vinyl sheds are cheaper than the equivalent in size and features timber sheds. Often they can compete even with metal sheds on price. But the plastic sheds have some better qualities than the steel ones - they don't rust, they have lower heat conductivity and don't turn into ovens in the summer. The plastic sheds don't freeze in the winter, they are light and easy to install.

There is very little negative to say about plastic sheds. For most people who don't want to buy them the main reason is that they just don't like the look and feel of the vinyl. Another reason could be that vinyl is not as robust as steel. But let's talk about steel sheds below:

Steel Sheds
Usually they are the cheapest from all. Price along with strength are the most important advantages of metal sheds. These make them perfect for storage of tools, bicycles and other stuff that is not sensitive to temperature differences. One steel shed is a really safe storage place for your garden tools.

The problem with metal sheds is they are not comfortable for staying inside. That's why you never see large steel sheds designed like mini-houses (which is the case with timber sheds). No one would use metal shed as a guest house, because it simply doesn't give any comfort. When the weather is hot, it's hot in the shed as well (it's even much worse if there is direct sunlight). When it's cold, the shed is freezing.

This is not a big problem if you want only to store things inside. But if you are looking to use the shed as a green summer office or a guest house, then there is only one choice:

Timber Sheds
The sheds made of wood are looking great. Staying inside is a pleasant experience and you may like it as much as staying in your home. The quality timber sheds are as sustainable as the best vinyl sheds. They are treated against termites and other pests. The good timber on the walls insures that the temperature inside stays cool in the hot time and warm when the weather outside is cold.

Maybe the major issue with the timber sheds is their price. The quality wooden sheds can cost twice the price of similar steel shed. Of course, you won't find equivalent steel sheds for many of the timber shed models. Using timber shed as green houses is very popular, that's why there are many designs with windows, roofs and other bells and wishes.

So what kind of shed do you have to choose? It depends on all that was said above, but it also depends on the way you are going to obtain your shed.
